Come prepared to do a lot of drawing and painting. The focus of this retreat going to be on capturing the wide variety of subject matter that there is to experience in this relatively  small geographical area. Every day we will be drawing and painting in different locations, that include, rural landscapes, thickly wooded areas, farmland, and the banks of the Ijssel river. Aside from painting the woods, paths, fields surrounding Zwolle, we will focus on each artist’s own creativity and expression. We will help you in every way we can as you explore your individual creative path through this special Dutch landscape.

Each morning will begin with a delicious breakfast in the hotel dining room. Then we will head out to a specific location to paint. We will provide a tasty en plein air lunch so that our painting sessions will not need to be interrupted. Depending on the day and depending on what we have planned we may move so that we are able to work from a new location. We have a visits planned to the city centrum, the local art museum, and the city’s classic Passiebloem molen (windmill).

We will eat dinner every night in one of Zwolle’s many restaurants, we will provide the first and the last night’s meals.

Drawing Safari
A Drawing Safari is an invaluable exercise and it is an ArtisTTable original. On this Drawing Safari we walk through the a city park, along the canal and the old streets of Zwolle. We will find beauty in the unexpected and be pleased that we find so much inspiration in this place. During our safaris we walk 2-5 minute and then we draw for 2 minutes and walk again. This is a great way to get to know and love your surroundings. As you learn to look fast and draw fast you will find that not only your drawing skills, but your powers of observation will be sharpened.

Your hosts, Tali and Royce

The ArtisTTable is operated by two artists, Royce Deans, from Michigan, USA and Tali Farchi, from the Netherlands. We eat, drink and sleep art and love to share the experience of creating art and travel with everyone. We have been leading workshops and retreats for the last 13 years.

Tali Farchi
Tali started her professional art training in Amsterdam at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in the field of animation. From there she worked on many projects from Sesame Street to feature length films. Her career as an animator and art director, gave way to art projects involving multi-media, multi-disciplines that included working with dancers, musicians, poets, choirs and orchestras. Her ability to think and work fast has been one of her greatest assets when it has come to the improvisational nature of the types of paintings she would create in these situations. More recently, she has taken to the much more quiet environment of painting the landscape. It is easy to recognize the vast experience she has had when you look at her work.

Tali’s main focus of late has been painting the landscape with acrylic and with oil pastels. Typically she chooses to work with each of these mediums while she on location. When working with Tali, you can expect that she will be able to help you pull your creativity directly from your heart and soul. Her enthusiasm for unlimited creative solutions is contagious. Whether hearing her comments on your work to watching one of her oil pastel demonstrations, you are sure to catch some of that from her.

Royce Deans
Royce grew up in Chicago and graduated from the American Academy of Art in graphic design and illustration. His experience in the art world is also wide and varied as he has done work for clients large and small and has been publisher and art director for an art and music magazine, and also ran a record label. Through the entire maze of his career he has continued to paint.

Nearly 20 years ago Royce began unwinding himself from the design and publishing world and started to focus solely on painting. As this second career that was the one he really only ever wanted in the first place allowed life has a painter to unfold. Splitting painting time between working with figure and painting the landscape there has been many opportunities for finding ways that each of these interests can indeed inform the other. While in his studio Royce works most often in oil, and paints the landscape on location in both gouache and acrylic. Teaching drawing and painting from his studio and at other institutions has given him the experience to look at students work and offer unique and individualize suggestions to how they might discover the solution that will best work for them. You can expect that during the retreat that Royce will give painting demonstrations and be available to assist you with any of your artistic challenges.

The instruction we offer comes in the form of painting demonstrations and personal instruction that is tailored to the individual’s needs. One of our goals aside from taking you to amazing places to work, is to help your see you subject matter in a whole new way. Instruction is optional, although we are always available and willing to help and assist in any way that we can.

zwolletravel

When traveling to Zwolle from outside of the Netherlands we suggest flying into Amsterdam. You will land at Schiphol airport and as you exit the baggage claim area you will find yourself with very easy access to the trains from the main hall of the airport.

Train tickets are available in the station and English is spoken there.

If you are driving from other European locations or from inside the Netherlands, Zwolle is located on the A28 where the N50 from the north and N35 from the south meet.
